4th Kings Royal Rifle Corps, 80 Brigade, 27th Division had been in and out of the front line in the southern part of the Ypres salient, since their arrival in France in December 1914 and on 1st March, 1915 they were ordered to make an attack on a section of German trenches. The Annals of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps described it as a gallant adventure which never had any chance of succeeding. 300 officers and men were involved of which 108 became casualties for no gains. The records show the deaths as being on 2nd March but the action took place the day before.
